Ai Weiwei Under House Arrest in Beijing

Probably China’s most famous, and certainly most politically vocal artist, Ai Weiwei has been detained by Beijing Police in an effort to prevent and event this weekend at the artists Shanghai studio space. The event was a party in protest of the governments orders to demolish the artists studio space.
“Tensions between the artist and the Chinese government have increased steadily over the past several years. Ai presented the results of an investigation into deaths related to the 2008 earthquake in the Sichuan province in the form of a major art exhibition at the historically-weighted Haus der Kunst, Munich, in 2009. He also participated in the design of the Bird’s Nest Stadium for to the 2008 Beijing Olympics – an event he subsequently condemned as politically-manipulated by the Chinese government. The iconography of his current installation in Tate Modern‘s Turbine Hall, comprised of more than one million hand-painted sunflower seeds produced in Jingdezhen, China, also addresses his nation’s political history, censorship, and problematic ideologies of labor.
According to Art Forum, Ai believes that “the decision to prevent him from attending the party was indicative of the Chinese government’s inability to tolerate dissent or debate.” Regardless of the outcome of the event itself, its prevention and the institutional and social-media dialogue surrounding it have provided a highly-visible means of engaging an international community on the role of art in censorship and the problematics of political transparency in the artist’s home country.” – Art Observed.

Scott Campbell burns entire Show in Mexico

A few weeks ago we mentioned the upcoming solo show of Scott Campbell at Mexico’s Vice Gallery. We were pretty excited to see new works from the hugely popular artist, one of our favourites, but also one of the world’s most in demand contemporary artists. As expected with a Scott Campbell show, the works sold out opening night, but the show didn’t end there. Campbell had issues with the way the gallery executed and handled the show, and after seeing no genuine comeback from the owner, the NYC Tattoo come fine artist took his entire sold out show to the sidewalk and lit fire to it! A lesson to all gallery owners to show the upmost respect its artists! If Scott wasn’t held in high enough regard by us already, he’s just boosted his stock ten-fold.

Harmony Korine ‘Wat Kyk Jy’ will feature Die Antwoord

It’s been revealed that Harmony Korine’s upcoming short film, ‘Wat Kyk Jy’, which means “watcha lookin’ at?”, will feature South African hip hop artists Die Antwoord. The mix of Korine and Die Antwoord is pretty much the most exciting proposition I could have even dreamed up. The film will premier at the Rotterdam Film Festival runs from January 26th to February 6th. Stay tuned for a trailer and more info.
The below excert is from Indiewire.
Last month, it was revealed that Harmony Korine was crowdsource funding his next film as part of the Rotterdam Film Festival’s Cinema Reloaded program. The director was seeking 30,000 Euros for a project that he said was “gonna be some really messed up” and do “some serious damage.” And it looks like he’s found some very suitable collaborators.
In an interview with Pitchfork, South African hip hop artists and certified eccentrics Die Antwoord have revealed that they are working with Korine on the project that will go in front of cameras very soon. “We’re doing a short film in a few weeks time with Harmony Korine that will screen at the Rotterdam Film Festival this January. [Korine] wrote the script and we made it a little more Zef. It’s come out fuckin’ wild. It’s a short film called ‘Wat Kyk Jy’—which means “watcha lookin’ at?”—which I tattooed onto my penis as well,” said male half of the duo Ninja.
It certainly sounds intriguing and given both artists’ unique visual sensibilities it should prove to be a pretty wild collaboration. And this isn’t the first time members of the Die Antwoord have caught the attention of filmmakers. As you might recall, female half Yo-Landi Vi$$er was bandied about as a potential candidate for the role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher‘s “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” but apparently wasn’t interested in the role. Die Antwoord’s participation here appears to be in front of the camera, though it’s unknown if they’ll also contribute music as well.

Oliver Peoples and Dr Romanelli Present Dr Goodfellow

Along with London retailer Hostem, proprietor James Brown and prestigious eyewear brand Oliver Peoples, Dr Romanelli has created this exceptional collection of figures based entitled “Dr. Goodfellow”.
Darren Romanelli is a pioneer of aesthetic innovation, renowned for reviving cultural classics by twisting the familiar into the fresh.  He applies a unique signature blending of past and present to each new creation with passion, dedication, commitment and, most importantly, personal connection. His latest project fuses elements of the Victorian era with the fantastic mythological characters from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
“Dr. Goodfellow is inspired by Robin Goodfellow: the mythic sprite known to many story tellers as ‘Puck’. He hides in the shadows, helping and healing, everything from broken bones to bruised souls. He is a playful and unpredictable character, who is as mischievous as he is medicinal,” explains Romanelli.  Like all of his projects, Dr. Goodfellow embodies the infectious enthusiasm that conceived it.
With an edition size of just 10 pieces, the statuettes are truly rare collectibles.  Exquisite features lend the figurines a sense of detail rarely found in bronze art of this scale, including scissors, stethoscope and a custom jewelry-quality monocle with chain produced by Oliver Peoples.
“We have known Darren for a long time and have always appreciated the quality of his collaborations,” says David Schulte, CEO of Oliver Peoples, Inc. “He is tastemaker driven and the stores he partners with are the directional leaders in their respective cities. For these reasons, we were thrilled to work with him on this special monocle”
Standing approximately 14 inches tall, Dr. Goodfellow is offered in three finishes.  Six are made in a traditional bronze patina, which will continue to gain character as the surface interacts with the atmosphere over time. Two are triple-plated in Sterling silver overlaid with nickel to prevent tarnishing, and the final two are triple-plated in 18k Gold making a total limited edition of 10.
Wearing a classic top hat and stately Oliver Peoples monocle, Dr. Goodfellow helps keep the magic in medicine and offers just what the doctor ordered!
Dr. Goodfellow will be available at select stores worldwide in November.
